Social Justice: A concept based upon the belief that each individual and group within a given society has a right to civil liberties, equal opportunity, fairness and participation in the educational, economic, institutional, social and moral freedoms and responsibilities valued by the community.

1. Explain the cause you've chosen.
   1. I have chosen the issue of texting while driving. Seeing the commercials and hearing the ads of the It Can Waitcampaign, I was inspired to create a poster using their shocking statistics. Their simple slogan says it perfectly: It Can Wait. There is no excuse--no text is worth your (or anyone else's) life.

2. Explain the point of view you plan to illustrate.
   1. I plan to illustrate the view of NOT texting and driving. It is dangerous and increases crash percentages by a shocking amount. Teens are targeted mostly, due to our generation of technology, but adults are just as guilty.Texting, or using the phone in general, while driving is a common problem found amongst all ages.

   1. The statistics really speak for themselves:
      • 97 percent of teens say texting while driving is dangerous — but 43 percent admit to doing so.
      • Almost all teens (nine in 10) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving.

      • According to 77 percent of teens, adults tell kids not text or email while driving — yet adults do it themselves "all the time."

      • Those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash.
      • Of all cell phone related tasks — including talking, dialing, or reaching for the phone — texting while driving is the most dangerous.3
      • In 2010, texting while driving increased 50 percent in one year, and two out of 10 drivers say they've sent text messages or emails while behind the wheel — despite a rush by states to ban the practice. 3
      • When drivers read or send a text message, their reaction time is doubled. When asked to respond to a flashing light while texting behind the wheel, drivers weremore than 11 times more likely to miss the light altogether.4

3. You may also choose to interview someone for this project. If so make sure you give credit to the person you interviewed citing who they are, the date of the interview, whether it was by phone or in person and the place where the interview occurred.
   1. What I would LOVE to do is take a survey of all PHS students, staff and faculty and create percentages based solely off of their results. Since they are closer to home, they would be more effective and really open people's eyes.
