Concentration: DONE!

Finally finished my concentration! Check it out on my flickr :)

My concentration is based on the idea of conversational photography I wanted to capture people’s facial expressions, rather than their words, throughout conversations of all types. Then, from their facial expression, I used colors and lighting to emphasize the mood of the conversation. While some emotions are clearer than others, some expressions are left open for interpretation. I tried to vary my subjects both in age and in gender.

Throughout my concentration, many moods are expressed. Some examples are laughter, imaginative, contemplative, eager, and alone. I hoped to portray emotions deeper than just happy and sad. I also found a lot of my pieces including more than one photograph because the repetition of the expression emphasized the conversation.  The multiple image pieces also strengthen the conversations mood because the same person is photographed showing conflicting emotions. I also focused on the subjects’ faces and downplayed the background.

Social Justice Project

Social Justice: A concept based upon the belief that each individual and group within a given society has a right to civil liberties, equal opportunity, fairness and participation in the educational, economic, institutional, social and moral freedoms and responsibilities valued by the community.

  1. Explain the cause you've chosen.
    1. I have chosen the issue of texting while driving. Seeing the commercials and hearing the ads of the It Can Waitcampaign, I was inspired to create a poster using their shocking statistics. Their simple slogan says it perfectly: It Can WaitThere is no excuse--no text is worth your (or anyone else's) life.

  2. Explain the point of view you plan to illustrate.
    1. I plan to illustrate the view of NOT texting and driving. It is dangerous and increases crash percentages by a shocking amount. Teens are targeted mostly, due to our generation of technology, but adults are just as guilty.Texting, or using the phone in general, while driving is a common problem found amongst all ages.

  3. Explain any other pertinent information that will help us better understand your work.
    1. The statistics really speak for themselves:
        • 97 percent of teens say texting while driving is dangerous — but 43 percent admit to doing so.
        • Almost all teens (nine in 10) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving.
        • According to 77 percent of teens, adults tell kids not text or email while driving — yet adults do it themselves "all the time."
        • Those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash.
        • Of all cell phone related tasks — including talking, dialing, or reaching for the phone — texting while driving is the most dangerous.3
        • In 2010, texting while driving increased 50 percent in one year, and two out of 10 drivers say they've sent text messages or emails while behind the wheel — despite a rush by states to ban the practice. 3
        • When drivers read or send a text message, their reaction time is doubled. When asked to respond to a flashing light while texting behind the wheel, drivers weremore than 11 times more likely to miss the light altogether.4
  4. You will also post images you found during your research and
    Texting while driving facts

  1. Cite any resources you used for the research.
    1. http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=2964
  2. Make these into links to the various websites.
  3. You may also choose to interview someone for this project. If so make sure you give credit to the person you interviewed citing who they are, the date of the interview, whether it was by phone or in person and the place where the interview occurred.
    1. What I would LOVE to do is take a survey of all PHS students, staff and faculty and create percentages based solely off of their results. Since they are closer to home, they would be more effective and really open people's eyes.
  4. See the assignment description for more details on your art project. Research is due this Thursday, November 8th with everything posted to the wiki.

third ward gallery assignment

What attracted you to this piece? I really loved their use of color in the background and the undefined lines that make up the face shape. Another aspect of this work that I found interesting was the multiple mini-paintings that were used as practice before the final.
Describe the elements and principles of design you saw present in the work. This piece features rule of thirds by the off-set placement of the face. Also, it has contrast between the cool colors of the background and the warmth of the face/hair.
What is the strongest thing about the work? I think the sense of color is really strong throughout the work. Also, her eyes really draw you in, so it captures the viewers attention really well.
What is the least effective thing about the work? The background could have been more elaborate, or there could have been more of the actual portrait visible.
What is the title of the artwork? No title available. I believe these were just portraits.
Who is the artist? See photo above.
What media was used? Watercolors.

What attracted you to this piece? The bold colors attracted me to the first piece, and the message--specifically the word "unapologetically"--stood out to me in the second.
Describe the elements and principles of design you saw present in the work. Contrast of colors is present in both. Rule of thirds is more predominant in the first, where as leading lines stands out in the second.
What is the strongest thing about the work? I absolutely adore the message in the second piece. I think it was designed with great visual strength. In the second, I thought it was quite clever to make the garbage into fish.
What is the least effective thing about the work? As much as I love the second piece, I think there is too much white space left.
What is the title of the artwork? Principles of Screenprinting.
Who is the artist? Tyanna Bule
What media was used? Screenprinting.

What attracted you to this piece? All the doodles :)
Describe the elements and principles of design you saw present in the work. Fill the frame and contrast of lines allow for organized chaos.
What is the strongest thing about the work? Everything going on in this piece keeps your eyes busy.
What is the least effective thing about the work? Maybe its monochromatic color pallet...but I don't really think anything about this piece is weak.
What is the title of the artwork? Doodle Days.
Who is the artist? Jeremy Pettis.
What media was used? Digital.

What attracted you to this piece? Bold colors!
Describe the elements and principles of design you saw present in the work. I loved the leading lines and the complementary color choice of the heart and brain cut-out. The bold color choice also created beautiful contrasts in the silhouette landscapes.
What is the strongest thing about the work? I found this pieces really easy to relate to. The constant battle between heart and head is very well known, being a teenage girl :P The second two silhouettes symbolized the sun setting on my childhood days/years. Left me with a bittersweet feeling.
What is the least effective thing about the work? Nothing :)
What is the title of the artwork? Foundations. Visual & Color Dynamics.
Who is the artist? Lynn Tomaszewski.
What media was used? Paint.

ALL ARTWORK WAS CREATED BY STUDENTS/STAFF OF MIAD.
