Social Justice Project

Social Justice: A concept based upon the belief that each individual and group within a given society has a right to civil liberties, equal opportunity, fairness and participation in the educational, economic, institutional, social and moral freedoms and responsibilities valued by the community.

  1. Explain the cause you've chosen.
    1. I have chosen the issue of texting while driving. Seeing the commercials and hearing the ads of the It Can Waitcampaign, I was inspired to create a poster using their shocking statistics. Their simple slogan says it perfectly: It Can WaitThere is no excuse--no text is worth your (or anyone else's) life.

  2. Explain the point of view you plan to illustrate.
    1. I plan to illustrate the view of NOT texting and driving. It is dangerous and increases crash percentages by a shocking amount. Teens are targeted mostly, due to our generation of technology, but adults are just as guilty.Texting, or using the phone in general, while driving is a common problem found amongst all ages.

  3. Explain any other pertinent information that will help us better understand your work.
    1. The statistics really speak for themselves:
        • 97 percent of teens say texting while driving is dangerous — but 43 percent admit to doing so.
        • Almost all teens (nine in 10) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving.
        • According to 77 percent of teens, adults tell kids not text or email while driving — yet adults do it themselves "all the time."
        • Those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash.
        • Of all cell phone related tasks — including talking, dialing, or reaching for the phone — texting while driving is the most dangerous.3
        • In 2010, texting while driving increased 50 percent in one year, and two out of 10 drivers say they've sent text messages or emails while behind the wheel — despite a rush by states to ban the practice. 3
        • When drivers read or send a text message, their reaction time is doubled. When asked to respond to a flashing light while texting behind the wheel, drivers weremore than 11 times more likely to miss the light altogether.4
  4. You will also post images you found during your research and

  1. Cite any resources you used for the research.
    1. http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=2964
  2. Make these into links to the various websites.
  3. You may also choose to interview someone for this project. If so make sure you give credit to the person you interviewed citing who they are, the date of the interview, whether it was by phone or in person and the place where the interview occurred.
    1. What I would LOVE to do is take a survey of all PHS students, staff and faculty and create percentages based solely off of their results. Since they are closer to home, they would be more effective and really open people's eyes.
  4. See the assignment description for more details on your art project. Research is due this Thursday, November 8th with everything posted to the wiki.

on my own

Tell why you think these items/places/people are so interesting and unique. In all honestly, I don't find this place interesting or unique. To me, it's all old and cliche. I took these photos when I was sitting on a bench after walking around and being tired. Just kind of pointing and shooting gave me a pretty cool angle. I think they are stronger together as a set.
What drew you to them? Different angles.
How do they make you feel? Blah.
Have you ever seen anything like it before? Yup.
Why did you choose it? After changing the colors and angles and adding effects, they turned out better than I thought. I'd like to use a third one and create a set of three.
Who/What does it remind you of? Just downtown buildings. Nothing special really.
Tell why you think these items/places/people are so interesting and unique. Over the summer, my best friend made me watch all the superhero movies. So seeing these creepy manikins looking out the window, I knew I could create something intense and movie-like from them. I thought i was pretty successful.
What drew you to them? Aside from my best friend loving superhero movies, my swim coach, Conner, also loves Batman. So that's pretty funny.
How do they make you feel? Super.
Have you ever seen anything like it before? Yea, in comic strips and movies.
Why did you choose it? They're cool-looking.
Who/What does it remind you of? My best friend and my swim coach.
Tell why you think these items/places/people are so interesting and unique. Lianne and Megan are two of my best friends. I care a lot about them and value their friendship. It is for this reason that I chose to photograph them. Also, they're both stunningly beautiful.
What drew you to them? They both were aware that I'm not a fan of the Third Ward, but they still managed to make my day worthwhile.
How do they make you feel? Happy.
Have you ever seen anything like it before? YUP. Everyday.
Why did you choose it? Because they're my friends and I spent the whole day with them.
Who/What does it remind you of? Lianne and Megan.
Tell why you think these items/places/people are so interesting and unique. I loved the bold colors--they're funky and pop-arty.
What drew you to them? Their colors.
How do they make you feel? Fun.
Have you ever seen anything like it before? Yup.
Why did you choose it? I chose them because they weren't old and third-wardy.
Who/What does it remind you of? My sock drawer.

inspiration

The Katie Gingrass Gallery was mostly filled with overpriced paintings, jewelry, dog collars, shoes, etc. However. I managed to find a few items, of similar style, that stood out to me. These shovels and wheelbarrows have been cut-out with extravagant patterns and designs and I thought they were really beautiful. I'm inspired to find something average and turn it into something art-worthy. Who doesn't need a giant, cut-out wheelbarrow int their bedroom or living room, right?
